Torrevieja has recently kicked off its 2023 kayak season with the thrilling Copa de España, organized by the Real Club Náutico Torrevieja. This marks the first major event since a six-month winter break, bringing together a diverse group of 405 paddlers eager to showcase their skills and passion for the sport.
Record Participation reflecting Growing Interest
This year, the event saw an impressive 5% increase in registrations compared to previous seasons. Among the participants, a total of 283 men and 121 women competed across various age categories, including:
- Infantil A and B
- Cadete A and B
- Juvenil
- Sub-23
- Sénior
- Veterans aged 35 to 74
Additionally, the event proudly featured three Paracanoe boats, reinforcing the commitment to inclusivity in competitive kayaking.
Safety First: Course Adjustments
Due to adverse weather conditions, including strong winds and rough sea states, the organizing committee decided to modify the course to ensure the safety of all paddlers. the original route posed significant risks, and the alternative circuit ensured that the event could proceed without compromising participant wellbeing.
A Challenging Competition Day
The competition began on March 1st at 9:30 AM, kicking off with the SS2 mixed Infantil category, which completed two laps around the revised 2,000-meter circuit. Following this, customary sea kayak races across all male categories, as well as Paracanoe competitions and SS1 female cadet races, also took place.
The harsh conditions made the competition both a physical and technical challenge, captivating not only the paddlers but also the excited spectators present. High levels of competitiveness and a passionate audience contributed to an electrifying atmosphere throughout the day.
Club Standings and Recognition
In a demonstrating show of teamwork and talent, the Club Deportivo Básico de Piragüismo El Sella clinched the top spot in the club rankings, followed closely by the Club de Mar Mallorca and the club Piragüismo Marlines de Lanzarote.
The awards ceremony took place at the Real Club Náutico Torrevieja,where Carlos Carmona,the club president,along with Diana Box,the Sports Councillor,and Alberto Gómez,the kayaking coach,congratulated the athletes for their determination and commendable performances.
