- The Orihuela City Council plans to expand its video surveillance system across the municipality, including coastal areas and surrounding villages.
- A €280,000 contract has been issued for the purchase, installation, and maintenance of 30 camera locations plus upgrades inside the local police station.
- New cameras will include advanced license plate recognition and contextual vision to help local police track vehicles involved in crimes or infractions.
- This phase is part of a larger security technology project costing over €1 million to eventually cover the entire municipality.
- Previously, 20 multisensor and license plate reading cameras were installed in the urban center, funded by EDUSI grants.
- The expansion prioritizes areas without existing surveillance before adding more cameras to the city center in future phases.
Orihuela Expands Video Surveillance to Coastal Areas and Villages
The Orihuela City Council is set to enhance public safety by extending its technological security infrastructure through a major expansion of its video surveillance system. This expansion aims to cover 30 new locations focusing on coastal neighborhoods and outlying villages (pedanías),along with upgrading the interior of the local police station.
Significant Investment for Safer Communities
In a newly announced tender, the municipality has earmarked €280,000 for the acquisition, installation, commissioning, connectivity, and ongoing maintenance of these surveillance devices.According to local officials, the areas targeted for coverage have been identified by police analysis as hotspots for criminal activity, traffic violations, and antisocial behavior.
This latest move represents the first phase of a larger, thorough security technology project expected to exceed €1 million in total investment over its entire rollout.
Where Will the New Cameras Be Installed?
The new system’s 30 locations are spread between coastal hotspots and scattered villages, covering key entry points and public zones that previously lacked surveillance infrastructure. The police station itself will also receive an upgrade, replacing three existing camera systems with 14 new devices.
| Area | Specific Locations |
|---|---|
| Pedanías (Villages) | La Aparecida, Arneva, Raiguero de Bonanza, Camino de Beniel, Camino Viejo de Callosa, La Campaneta, Correntías Altas, Correntías Medias, Molins, la Murada, La Matanza Parish, San Bartolomé, Torremendo |
| coastal Zone | Punta Prima, La Zenia, Cabo Roig, Aguamarina, La Regia, Mil palmeras, Colinas |
| Police Station Interior | Upgrade of existing 3 systems to 14 cameras |
New Technology: License Plate Recognition and Context Cameras
One of the main innovations in this new surveillance phase is the introduction of license plate reading cameras combined with contextual cameras. These tools will help the Local Police quickly identify and track the movement of vehicles involved in illegal activities or violations, providing a clear picture of which vehicles were in specific places at given times.
Mónica Pastor, Councillor for Citizen Security, highlighted the importance of these systems by stating that they are “a very important tool in service of safety and coexistence.” She added that the police will gain access to “technological means to act more quickly and precisely.” pastor also confirmed that future expansion phases will continue until the whole municipality is covered by the system.
Prioritizing Areas Without existing Surveillance
Although this current contract does not include new camera installations in Orihuela’s urban center, future phases will address that area. The city already has several surveillance devices, including a system set in place last March hosting 16 multisensor cameras with 270-degree vision and four license plate recognition cameras. Backed by a €185,000 investment funded by EDUSI grants, the urban area’s system represents an integral part of the overall security plan.
The current expansion focuses first on areas previously lacking surveillance to maximize coverage and public safety impact.
Orihuela’s Commitment to Enhanced Security
- Expanded surveillance will improve police response time and accuracy.
- the system integrates the latest imaging technologies for detailed and reliable monitoring.
- Long-term plans aim for full municipal coverage, boosting safe environments across Orihuela’s diverse zones.
Through this strategic investment, Orihuela strengthens its stance as a proactive city safeguarding its residents and visitors by leveraging cutting-edge technology in public safety.
