Celebrating may: A Month Dedicated to the Virgin mary in Torrevieja
The city of Torrevieja is gearing up for a month filled with devotion and cultural activities as the Real Association ‘Hijos de la Inmaculada’ showcases a carefully curated program for May,dedicated exclusively to the Virgin Mary. This month is recognized by the Church as a special time to honor the Holy mother, culminating in a series of events designed to engage the community and highlight its rich traditions.
Highlight Events for May
One of the standout events is the solemn mass scheduled for Saturday, May 24, at 8:00 PM. During this service, a new aureola and pectoral cross, named the ’Santa Misión’, will be blessed and inaugurated. The aureola features a simple silver ring adorned with twelve stars, and at its centre lies a light blue stone, symbolizing purity and devotion. Crafted by the David Religious Goldsmith workshops in Valencia, this aureola serves as a true representation of the heritage, as it corresponds to the coronation emblem created nearly 60 years ago for La Purísima.
In addition to the aureola, the pectoral cross, also silver and embellished with a blue stone, will be worn by the Virgin accompanied by an episcopal cord rather than the traditional chain.
Engaging the Community: Poetry Contest and Daily Prayers
Another significant event includes the XXI poetry Contest “Juegos Florales,” which takes place on the same day, beginning at 6:00 PM. Participants have until May 10 to submit their entries, with a remarkable turnout expected as the contest is an established tradition. For more details about the contest, interested parties can visit the association’s official website at www.hijosdelainmaculada.es.
Throughout the month, the community can visit La Purísima in its chapel and adjoining museum every Sunday from 9:45 AM to 11:00 AM, adjusted to avoid conflict with First Communions. Additionally, the daily praying of the Holy Rosary will commence each evening at 7:30 PM, followed by the prayer series “Las Flores a María” before the mass at 8:00 PM. Notably, on the first and last Saturdays of May, the prayers will be complemented by the singing of the Felicitación Sabatina rather of the rosary.
Supporting Local Traditions
These meaningful events are made possible by the patronage of the Municipal Institute of Culture “Joaquín Chapaprieta” through competitive grants from the City Council of Torrevieja. This support underscores the communal spirit and dedication to preserving local traditions and fostering a sense of togetherness among residents.
With a rich tapestry of activities lined up, Torrevieja invites everyone to partake in this May celebration, fostering both spiritual growth and cultural enrichment.
