Torrevieja Presents Innovative Multifunctional Floodable Park Project in Aguas Nuevas
In an ambitious move to boost sustainable urban advancement and community wellbeing, Torrevieja’s city officials have revealed plans for a new multifunctional floodable park in the Aguas Nuevas neighborhood. This project, spearheaded by Mayor Eduardo Dolón and key city council members alongside AGAMED management, is part of the municipality’s comprehensive Plan Director de Pluviales (Pluvial Water Master Plan).
Location and Project Timeline
The park will be constructed within a strategic area bounded by Avenida de las cortes Valencianas, Avenida de La Mancha, and the streets Sancho Panza and Dulcinea. The development will roll out in two phases:
- Phase 1: Launching September 2025, with an investment exceeding €1.2 million and an expected duration of nine months.
- Phase 2: Currently in planning, this phase will extend the project coverage and introduce additional recreational facilities.
More Than Just a Park: A Multifunctional Green Space Over 4,100 m²
The park aims to fuse ecological infrastructure and recreational uses, delivering a high-quality urban space where flood control meets leisure. Its key features include:
| Area | Description |
|---|---|
| Skatepark & Bowl Skating | Concrete prefabricated elements designed for both sport and integration into the stormwater drainage system. |
| Green Naturalized Area | Over 1,500 m² of rain gardens and sustainable drainage systems utilizing native plants to enhance biodiversity. |
State-of-the-Art Water Management and Accessibility
One standout feature is the park’s ability to hold up to 2,000 cubic meters of stormwater, significantly reducing flood risk in the surrounding urban area. The park uses a connected system of retention basins operating by gravity, enhancing drainage efficiency and safety.
pedestrian accessibility will also be improved with new walkways connecting Dulcinea, Sancho Panza, and avenida de La Mancha streets to Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas. These paths will feature permeable pavement to aid water absorption and seamlessly incorporate green spaces.
Landscaping and Ecological Enhancements
- Retention of 43 existing trees plus planting of 10 new trees.
- Introduction of over 2,100 shrubs and aromatic plants, including lemon verbena, sage, rosemary, lavender, thyme, and Teucrium fruticans.
- 250 m² of permeable meadows to support ecological functions.
- Installation of an 80-meter-long vegetative acoustic screen with ornamental Cupressus sempervirens trees to reduce noise pollution.
Phase Two: Expanding green and Recreational Amenities
The upcoming second phase will take place along Avenida Cortes Valencianas towards Avenida del Sur. it aims to add:
- New green spaces with playground equipment for children.
- Calisthenics zones and biosaludable (health-promoting) exercise areas.
- Enhanced communal areas to promote health, fitness, and social interaction among residents.
Commitment to Sustainability and Urban Resilience
With this project, the Torrevieja City Council and AGAMED demonstrate their dedication to fostering urban resilience in the face of climate change. By combining advanced flood management infrastructure with naturalized spaces for leisure and exercise, the city advances its vision for a sustainable, high-quality urban environment that prioritizes both ecological health and community wellbeing.
This innovative approach aligns with global urban trends emphasizing green infrastructure, ecosystem services, and the enhancement of public spaces as vital to modern city life.
