Record-Breaking October Heatwave Hits Costa Blanca: AEMET Warns of Unseasonal Highs
Historic Autumn Temperatures Shock Alicante Province
Residents and visitors across the Costa Blanca are experiencing an exceptional autumn heatwave this week, with temperatures soaring well beyond seasonal norms. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) forecasts that parts of Alicante province could surpass 35°C-levels more typical of mid-summer-setting new records for late October in data tracked since 1950.
“We have a very warm week until friday with temperatures that will exceed 30 degrees in Alicante and minimums of above 20 degrees,” an AEMET spokesperson confirmed. “Peak temperatures are expected on Wednesday and Thursday, well above the normal for the time of year.”
Inland areas, especially in the Vega Baja such as Orihuela City, are predicted to break the 35°C barrier on Thursday, while regions like Vinalopó and L’alacantí will hover around 30°C. Minimum nighttime temperatures are projected to remain above 20°C, an anomaly for late October, making conditions feel more like late summer.
Weekend Change on the Horizon
The remarkable warmth is expected to subside by Friday. AEMET anticipates a notable drop in nighttime temperatures-potentially below 10°C in mountainous areas-before stabilizing around 15°C along the coast by Sunday. Cloud cover is likely to increase at the weekend, introducing the possibility of rain, though the overall weather will remain relatively mild for the season.
This spell of unseasonal warmth is in sharp contrast to the heavy rains and storms brought by DANA-Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos (an isolated high-altitude depression)-that affected the region earlier in October.
Impacts on Daily Life and Warnings
The abrupt rise in temperatures has prompted renewed public health advisories. Local authorities are urging vulnerable groups, including the elderly and those with chronic health issues, to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and to stay hydrated. The Spanish phrase ola de calor fuera de temporada (out-of-season heatwave) is being used in weather alerts and news bulletins, underlining the unusual nature of this episode.
Businesses linked to tourism, such as beachside cafés and leisure providers, are reporting unexpected boosts in turnout as both locals and tourists flock to the coast to enjoy the extended summer-like conditions.
Local Reaction and Climate Context
Meteorologists and climatologists in the region are raising concerns about the frequency and intensity of such late-season heat events. “The climate data is clear: these phenomena are becoming more common due to underlying changes in global weather patterns,” said a local climate scientist.
Social media platforms are awash with images and comments from residents and visitors, many surprised by the warmth in what is known as “veroño”-a common Spanish blend of verano (summer) and otoño (autumn) used to describe these autumnal warm spells.
Looking Ahead
While the heatwave will soon give way to more typical October weather, experts remind residents and visitors to be prepared for continued fluctuations, including the increased risk of sudden storms (known locally as gota fría or “cold drop”) once the warm air breaks.
